about

I wrote this song the day after I wrote London in the same drop D tuning. This was originally titled "Begin" and then "The Prize" but at some point I started thinking of it as "A Good Day" -- perhaps as an homage to the incredible Jewel song by the same name.

lyrics

It's a good day to begin
the thing that came after the thing that ended
but there's nothing on TV tonight
so I go to bed at 9

tomorrow is one more shot at the prize

the sunlight makes me want to squint
and your face is so beautiful when it's bathed in it
but i've got so much on my mind right now
and i want to let you in, but i don't know how

but it feels right when you stay the night
but i don't
want to waste any more time
talking on the phone

when I’ve got one more shot at the prize
i'm taking my next go round at life
they told me that it was over, but they lied
so I want my next shot at the prize

And I don’t want to expect the worst
it's the untaken risk that really hurts
i see my second chance coming 'round the bend
and I pray to god, I won't mess it up again

so I try to resist all the people I miss
as this fear rushes in
but you know I'm finally resolved
I’ve got to take it all on the chin

to get in my next shot at the prize
I’m taking my next go ‘round at life…
they told me that it, it was over, but they lied
and I'm so glad that I'm here tonight
‘cuz I want one more… shot at the prize

it's a good day to begin...
