I wrote this song around the same time as "You Got Me," and I was beside myself when Doris agreed to sing on it. Watching her cut her vocals in the studio, singing along with my tracks, was almost as good as singing this together a few months later on stage at Eddie's Attic. (And Doris played bass for the first time!)
lyrics
I know how to sing
I know how to bring
myself to whatever is unfolding
I know how to let go of what is getting going
I know how to try
I know how to lie
to myself when I'm in my bed at night
I know how to drown swimming against your tide
And five years on, I belong to no one
Chorus
Because I know how to run
and I know how to fall
then I know how to feel nothing at all
I know how love where I'm going
more than where I'm coming from
yeah, I know how to run
And I know that you love me
I know that I love you, too
Especially when you do all the things I want you to
I know that you're the closest one
who's come to breaking through
Oh, but ten years on, I'm still not the one
Chorus
I know how to run, run, run, run
Bridge
Phone numbers stuffed into my pockets
Bird flying off my window sill
And no matter how far I can rocket out of here
I will fear just standing still
Chorus
I know how to run
I know how to hide
I know how to feel nothing inside
I know how to love what's possible
more than what's done
I know how to run
Yeah, I know how to run
I know how to run, run, run, run,
Run, run, run, run, run
I know how to run
